A group of seven accused individuals of Germany's far-left organization face trial over multiple violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “the hammer group”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist group along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the group was behind targeting locations in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M., are additionally accused for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat from the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or remain detained.”
