RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of access tunnels down to the facility... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - enforced militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were a great many British troops deployed over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our safety, highlights how British military are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" on Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
